5. IT Project Manager

A project manager is a critical staff member for any business, but in IT, it takes on increased importance. IT projects and initiatives are strategic to any business. A good IT project manager will be able to ensure that not only IT projects are executed to desired outcomes, but that the project meets the business needs as well.

A seasoned IT project manager will be able to conduct an IT strategy and business case, and ensure that the business needs, risks, and objectives are at the forefront of all IT projects and initiatives.

The project manager will ensure that all IT projects are adequately planned and that all scope, timelines, costs, and resources are aligned with the project’s overall strategic direction.

Skills Needed in an IT Project Manager

An IT project manager is not an entry-level role and will require a lot of experience and qualifications. Good IT project managers will have the following skillsets:

  • Has experience or at least familiar with different project management frameworks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Experience in delegating tasks and managing teams
  • Ability to multi-task

6. Systems Engineering Manager

IT systems engineering managers will ensure that IT systems are fit for purpose, and they are compatible with other systems and counterparts.

This is a critical component for any business, as if the IT systems fail to work well with each other, the whole business could fail. IT systems engineering managers will identify risks and issues with other systems and perform regular checks to ensure that systems are working as they should.

Skills Needed in a Systems Engineering Manager

A systems engineering manager requires a lot of experience especially overseeing projects and leading a team. The following are the necessary qualifications for this role:

  • Knowledgeable in modern systems engineering methodologies and best practices
  • Experienced in developing and implementing technical solutions and strategies
  • Possesses conflict resolution, problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills

This position may require at least 7 years of experience.

7. IT Director

An IT director is the head of IT of a company and is responsible for the leadership and direction of the IT function and its staff. They will have to have a thorough understanding of the company, including its business strategy and key business drivers.

The IT director will determine and develop the IT vision, objectives, and ways of spending the budget. The director is also responsible for the staff of the department, as well as overseeing and developing the IT staff.

Skills Needed in an IT Director

The IT director needs to have a large amount of experience, especially in a management capacity. The following skillset is required for this role:

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure
  • High level of interpersonal skills and networking
  • The ability to delegate tasks and manage teams

This position will need more or less about 10 years of experience.
